I promise you all that I haven’t been neglecting my blog, but unfortunately I haven’t been at work for the last 9 days or so. My schedule falls weird sometimes and about once a month, I have an extended period of time off. With no work, I really have nothing EMS-y to write about. So, to keep myself occupied on this long night, I have decided to write about what I do in between shifts at the station.
Once I am off of a 24, I normally come home, cuddle with my chihuahua (Jasper), and sleep until lunch time.
I run to my gym and hit the Body Combat floor to burn some fat-medic calories at least 3 times a week. Body Combat is a mixed martial arts program by Les Mills. (I highly recommend it!)
Depending on the time of week, I normally like to go visit my parents, grandparents, and sister and her family. Some days are filled with swim meets and watching my nieces and nephew swim at practice (coaching them from the side), and others are filled with intense rounds of Apples to Apples with the whole MsP family.
I bowl every Thursday night with Grumps and crew. Our team name is Sofa King Cool (I’ll leave you to figure that one out) and I’m a terrible bowler, but I still have fun!
Other nights are filled with paperwork that I haven’t kept up with at work, or podcasting for EMS Garage and GenMed.
Some nights I sit in bed watching movies, drawing a new tattoo, or playing guitar and writing music.
I enjoy the occasional shopping trip. I always say that I’m just browsing, but I usually come home with something. Most often weird and interesting socks. You can never have too many pairs of socks. <3
Most nights, I’m interacting with other professionals around the country and globe on Skype, Twitter, and Facebook. I find these late night chats entertaining and extremely valuable to my growth as a medic.
I have a roommate that has been my best friend since high school, so on some nights we like to sit in our Snuggies watching movies, having a glass of wine, and laughing about something that we did over the course of our week. Her company keeps me sane.
I like to hang out with old friends and new friends. About once a week you can find me at Pete’s, drinking a margarita and watching a game with the guys and gossiping with the girls.
Every now and again, you can catch me out on my family’s farm being productive or simply hugging on my horses. I also enjoy fishing at my grandfather’s pond for Brimm and Catfish- which are usually released right back into that same pond.
I like to be outside in the Louisiana sun. I love the woods, and hiking until I can’t see anymore. I enjoy sitting in the silence of a field and waiting for animals to pass me by without ever knowing that I was watching. Some days I bring Alice and Jasper out with me and I laugh until I can’t breathe as they chase unsuspecting mice, rabbits, birds, butterflies, foxes, and most often each other.
All in all, what I’m saying is that- there is life outside of my job. EMS may be my passion and my career for now. It is my calling and my duty. But there is life in between that is so important that sometimes we take for granted. So, next time you’re on a bad call, or having a terrible shift, remember that this shift will end and you can look forward to the in between.

Another slice of the real MsP. We should all slow down and appreciate the little things in life. I love my work to no end, but I’ll also be looking forward to my next in between.
i completely agree jera ill never forget this answer to a question my brother told me but before i say it ill give you some background info the town i live “in” is savannah ga home to the art college SCAD which is atleats top 5 in the nation theres a smaller “local” college called AASU that also has a arts program now my brother is a AMAZING graphic designer about to graduate from AASU and the thing is well the SCAD kids have a very “unique” sense of style shall i say to stay politically correct so we have another friend that goes to classes with my brother also for GD so i asked my brother one day i said “how is it you and jamall can be amazing artists and look “normal” and yet all these SCAD kids look “unique” in their style? and my brother replied back “because me and jamall make art our passion and the SCAD kids make art their life”….and i think that can really translate to any profession youn got to make sure(especially in stressful career paths ad FIRE/EMS) that you have a life outside of work and you dont make your career your life
great point, Jody! What a great (and unexpected) quote! It is very true, there is a difference between being passionate and making it your life. thank you for reading, as usual!
thanks for reading, Jer. <3
I envy you!
